A day on a dramatic but easily accessible stretch of the Pennine Way on the moors between Littleborough, Lancashire, and Ripponden, West Yorkshire. There are two easy circular walks, either side of a pub lunch. These will take in a number of natural features (large stones, heather moorland) and man-made structures (paved trackways, reservoirs, water courses, distant wind turbines).

We will meet at the Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre between 09.30 and 10.00 for a coffee and to plan the day.

You can see more of the area in Roger’s album at

Please note that there are no bad-weather-friendly locations nearby. If poor weather is forecast, the organiser will contact participants one or two days prior to the event to reschedule.

Maximum participants : 6

Meals : We will meet at Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre for a coffee. Lunch can be either at a local pub on the route, or you are very welcome to bring a packed lunch.

Clothing and equipment : Waterproof jacket (and trousers if available), warm clothing (hat, scarf and gloves may be needed), walking boots essential. It might also be sunny, so sun hats and sun cream may be needed. It is usually windy.

Challenges and accessibility : The two circular walks are each between 1 and 2 miles on footpaths or reasonably even moorland ground which may be somewhat wet and/or muddy in places.  Both circuits have a point close to half way where someone could easily turnaround and retrace their steps without getting lost if they wished.

Toilet facilities : Toilets are available at the Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre and at the lunchtime pub.  Otherwise behind one of the many convenient rocks!

Other costs : Parking charges apply at the Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre from 8am to 6pm at £1 for up to 2 hours and £2 for up to 4 hours. NB after coffee we will transfer to a free car park from which to start the walk.
