A Conversation with Magum Photographer, Ian Berry

One of my favourite books on photography was written by Bill Jay and David Hurn and is entitled ‘On Being a Photographer’. The book describes itself as a book about how to think and act like a photographer and there are references to our speaker, Ian Berry throughout, references such as:

“That is true, even with a difficult abstract idea like chaos. The extraordinary ability of photographers like Ian Berry or Sebastião Salgado is that they could shoot pictures in the same situation alongside many other photographers of lesser ability and not only clearly reveal the chaos but also produce images of power which so impress themselves on your consciousness that they are never forgotten”

The book goes on to describe how David Hurn and Ian Berry, when they were young photojournalists, would often meet up in London with other photographers, such as Don McCullin and Philip Jones-Griffiths and talk photography. Many of them, including Ian who would later become members of the famous agency, Magnum Photos.

Ian, now in his 80s is still working through Magnum and is often away on assignment. Earlier this year he spoke at The Photography show which has been described as an amazing talk, I think we are very lucky to be able to welcome him to our region in the East Midlands.

The photographs reproduced with this report are shown with Ian’s permission.

Colours of Whatton

Photobook Project

We have been holding our events at Whatton for some time now and earlier this year we held a photobook workshop where the attendees went out into the village to take images that interested them.

The result is a book and an exhibition. After Ian’s talk you will be able to talk to the photographers and see their work and talk to them about making photobooks.
