Having spent most of her life living a stone’s throw from the coast, Marianthi's photographic work is inspired by a strong connection to the sea. She is drawn to those dynamic spaces at the far edges of the land; shifting sands, cycles of ebb and flow, and the transience of the littoral landscape. When not creating work out on her local beach, she is drawn to the landscapes and communities of the far north.  Recent work has focused on visual explorations of coastlines in the Outer Hebrides and Arctic Greenland.

Using camera-less techniques alongside traditional photographic processes has become an increasing part of her practice - her ongoing 'Seableed' project involves experimenting with the traditional cyanotype chemical formula. Working with light-sensitive papers out on the beach, coated papers are exposed to the dynamic elements of wind, seawater and sand. Back in the studio, other media are often selectively incorporated into some of the pieces.

In recent years, she has explored book arts as an alternative way of presenting her photographic work. Offering a creative approach to presenting collections of work, hand-made books are a way of showing images that might otherwise never be printed, and allow artistic control of every aspect - from design, sequencing, printing and production. She loves the fact that no two books will be the same, the hand of the artist evident in each carefully-crafted volume.

Marianthi exhibits her work regularly in solo and groups shows across the UK and is currently represented by galleries in London, Scotland and North West England. Copies of her Collector’s Edition books are on permanent display in London and in Ilulissat, Western Greenland. To see a selection of Marianthi’s work, please see her website: http://marianthilainas.com/

Marianthi Lainas

Having spent most of her life living a stone’s throw from the coast, Marianthi's photographic work is inspired by a strong connection to the sea. She is drawn to those dynamic spaces at the edges of the land; shifting sands, cycles of ebb and flow, unpredictable seas and reflected light. Whether working close to home or further afield in more remote coastal locations, her aim is to simplify this littoral landscape to its essential elements of colour and form.

Over the past two years, producing hand-crafted books has become an integral part of Marianthi's photographic process. Offering an alternative and creative approach to presenting collections of work, they are a way of showing images that might otherwise never be printed, and allow artistic control of every aspect; from design, sequencing, printing and production. She loves the fact that no two books will be the same, the hand of the artist evident in each carefully-crafted volume.
