Be warned, a day spent with Dave and his approach to photography involves a lot of smiling. Specializing in 'street photography' Dave has a talent for seeing potential in situations that many of us would miss. His images show the quirky, often humorous relationships that occur between people and the world around them.

In his approach to street photography, Dave identifies a location, often with a promising backdrop of signage, street furniture or graffiti and will wait for 'something to happen'. Dave will introduce participants to his approach and will share his techniques for finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, often documenting the surreal happenings on the city streets and the Hastings Pirate Day has to be up there with the best!

Some of his work can be viewed on his website:

The workshop will be split in two with the presentation of techniques and what specifically to look for at the Pirate Festival, taking place in the morning at the Battle Memorial Hall, 81 High Street, Battle, after which, at around lunchtime, we will catch the train from the nearby Battle station to Hastings, 15 minutes away where Dave will help get the participants into the mood for the rest of the day’s fun. During this time Dave will be constantly on hand to advise and encourage.

Hastings Pirate Day is now in its fourth year and is proving a real crowd puller with everybody out to show off their best pirate costume and have a great time.

Suggested equipment for delegates to bring would be any camera, with a short zoom or medium focus prime lens, whether fixed or interchangeable. There will not be the opportunity to use tripods nor flash.

Important Location Information

Due to the popularity of the Hastings Pirate Day, driving and parking in Hastings can be a nightmare. We have therefore taken the decision to run the lecture part of the workshop in Battle and from there, catch the train directly into Hastings, a mere 15 minutes away. Participants can then move freely throughout the festival and get out of the town as and when they want via the train. A cheap day return ticket, between Battle and Hastings, is included in the price.

There is an open car park at Old Ladies Court, Battle TN33 0AR nearby which is open 24 hours a day.

Tickets cost £50 RPS Members and £55 Non-Members.

The ticket price includes tea and coffee refreshments at the start of the workshop and during breaks. All other refreshments or food are the responsibility of the participant. A cheap day return train ticket is included in the price of the workshop to enable participants to get in and out of the Hastings festival location easily.
